Now we're ready to paint!

Step 1.Draw outline.

Make sure that you're in normal mode and that Opacity and Flow is set to 100%. Select the paintbrush from the left tool bar. You can paint with whatever size brush you want. I used a size 2 for the outline.

  1. Draw the outline of the image and add any additional lines you think will help you.

Step 2. Laying down your flat colors.

Well, here is where you ahh...lay down your flat colors. Pick a hard edge brush, any size. I use a size 19 and up to paint in the big areas and I use 19 down to get into the tighter spots. (Paint over your line, you still have the photo for reference.) Tip: Use the bracket keys on your keyboard to change the size of the paintbrush, use [ to make the brush smaller and use ] to make them bigger.

Step 3. Building upon your flats.

In this step I started to add more lines and details to get a feel for the proportions.

  1. Zoom in, using a small brush, add details.

  2. Select the smudge tool to push, pull, and shape the area you detailed. Change the strength as needed. At 100% the smudge tool will pull the color and keep going with it. At lower strengths it will pull and then start to fade.

  3. Select the doge/burn icon.

Here, I shade with the burn tool. You can use it to shade, light, mid, and dark colors. If you press and hold down alt, the burn tool will become the dodge tool which you can use for highlighting. This isn't the final shading. I do it just so I can get the proportions right.

Step 4. Detailing.

Here is hardest and most time consuming part.

  1. Use the eracer tool to clean and define the edges (forehead, bridge, lips, chin, etc.).

Tip: When using a tool and you want to create a straight line, hold down shift and click the right mouse key to set one point. While still holding shift, move the tool to another area and click again. Photoshop will creat a straight line from point one to point two. Using that technique, you can created a perfect curved line easily just by doing little lines at a time. Great for fixing/reshaping the image.
